BEIJING: A Chinese man set fire to a parked Volkswagen Beetle to keep himself warm in Nanjing city of Jiangsu Province on Tuesday. He was arrested the next morning and charged with arson.
The man in his twenties, surnamed Chen, told the police he did it in a druken stupor to keep himself and his friends warm. But he soon moved away from the blazing car as the heat was unbearable.
“I thought burning the car would keep me warm. I left after the fire became big because it got too hot,” the police quoted Chen as saying during the briefing.
The police identified Chen with the help of a surveillance video camera. Video footage showed the suspect used a straw mat on top of the car and lighted it up. The car was soon engulfed in flames.
Firemen rushed to extinguish the fire but the yellow Volkswagen Beetle was thoroughly charred by the time they reached the spot.
